History of Mattresses
Mattresses were first known to exist in the Roman Empire. During this time they were stuffed with any available soft material from plant fibers such as hay and reeds to animal fibers such as wool and feathers. These were then placed on a platform if you were wealthy enough to afford that space.
By the 1500's mattresses were stuffed with straw or down and supported by interwoven ropes. To adjust the firmness level, you loosened or tightened these ropes; hence, the saying "sleep tight."
In the 1700's cotton mattresses came into popularity along with cast iron bed frames. These two did not provide such friendly conditions to bed bugs, so the phrase "don't let the bed bugs bite" started seeing a reduction of use.
Finally, in 1865 the first coil spring mattress was patented although springs had been used in other furniture as early as the 1830's.
In America in 1940 futons became all the rage, although they had been popular in the Far East for centuries.
Waterbeds became the ultimate in comfort in the 1960's.
Now, we have memory foam mattresses, inner coil spring mattresses, and air chamber mattresses to choose from, even in sofa bed mattresses, a modern convenience of comfort and practicality.
Size
Sofa bed mattresses are usually a bit shorter than regular bed mattresses. Twin size is still 38 inches wide but only 72 inches long instead of the standard 75 inches. Full size also has the standard width of 52 inches, but falls short 3 inches of the standard at 72 inches long.
